We Launched Our Blog From Hospital Rooms (There Is No Perfect Time)

L: “Sorry, we were at urgent care. One has croup and the other has the stomach bug.”

B: “I’m not going to be able to make that one, mom’s in the hospital again.”

T: “Count me out for the meeting… being induced on Wednesday.”

Hey there Providence — we are Tracy, Lindsey and Brooke, the founders of Providence Moms Blog, and we’ve been busy over the last two months getting ready to launch this site for you. And each one of us did pieces of it from a hospital room.

We share this with you because it represents the gritty reality that is life as a mom. On one hand, you could argue that it was crazy for us to take this on right now, that it would’ve been more ideal to wait for the ‘right’ time to begin such an endeavor. Perhaps it would have made sense to wait for a time when things were calm, when we had plenty of free time and emotional energy. But of course, had we done that, this blog would never have come to fruition.

We’ve all heard people say there is no perfect time to have a baby, no perfect time to add a second or third child to your family, to change jobs, to move… you get the picture. But in launching this blog; from hospital rooms, from under nursing babies, tantruming toddlers, and family obligations, with work tucked in the crevices between sick children and piles of laundry, we would argue that actually, now IS the perfect time.

Stick with us here.

You see, in founding this blog and starting it together, we have already seen emerge a mini version of the village we hope to create. Interspersed among the texts about finding writers and fighting with technology, are texts about finding lost backpacks and fighting with children and husbands. We talk business, but we also talk about our struggles and successes as moms. We vent to each other, encourage each other, celebrate each other. Yes, working on getting this blog up and running has added a bit more work to our already active lives, but it has also solidified old friendships and forged new ones. It has deepened the sense of community we feel in our lives, and that is of vital importance.

Our goal with Providence Mom Blog is to build this same type of community for you; the sort of community of support and sharing that we have already begun to cultivate amongst ourselves. Why, you might ask? Because moms can’t do this alone. In this age of social media where we often connect with people on a surface level, it is too easy to believe that everybody else has it all together. Spoiler alert: they don’t. We intend, with your help and support, to create a space where we can see the truth and vulnerability of motherhood, a space where we celebrate victories and failures, successes and struggles. A place where we can be real together.

We’re so excited to have you on this journey with us.

Love,

Lindsey, Brooke & Tracy — your Providence moms

I Remember…

0

To the woman who wishes to be a mama,

I know that you never imagined that getting pregnant would  be this hard. I know that you never thought that it would consume every waking moment or that you would exhaust every possible outlet to make it happen. I also know that my story will not bring you any solace or make your journey any easier. I know that I have crossed over to the other side — that I am a mom. I am no longer like you, but I want you to know that I remember.

I remember that excitement when I first started to try and how ready my husband and I were to have a family. I remember downloading apps, taking my temperature, purchasing ovulation kits, and tracking bodily functions that I never once paid any attention to prior to this journey. The first few months I reminded myself that it may not happen right away. I tried desperately not to over-analyze every twinge and cramp. However, as the months dragged on, I feared something was wrong.

I remember the relief I finally felt when I picked up the phone and called the infertility clinic. I did not know what they would find, but at least it felt like a small victory in this never ending battle. I remember when testing showed that everything was normal, there were no answers, and there was still no baby.

I remember finally deciding to take that next step and dive into a world of hormones and procedures. I remember how the hormones slowly took over my body. I remember the tears, the struggle to get out of bed, and the fake smile I put on everyday. I remember the anger and the frustration. I remember having no control over my body, my emotions, and constantly reminding myself that it was going to be worth it. Each new plan brought forth a surge of hope, and each time it failed, my world came crashing down. I remember the two week wait. I remember feeling inadequate.

I remember my friends’ families growing. I remember the elation I felt for them and the absolute devastation I felt for myself at the same time. It was so hard to explain that I wanted nothing but amazing things for them, but at the same time I was mourning my own loss at each new announcement. I remember avoiding Facebook, baby showers, and leaving parties early because it was all too much. I remember losing myself for awhile.

I remember three failed Clomid cycles, three failed IUIs, and a completely failed IVF cycle. I remember watching my husband finally break down, my rock, and being strong for him. I remember difficult conversations. The realization that we would be parents, even if it was not how we envisioned.  I remember the support of family and friends. I remember that even in my darkest moments, I was never alone.

I also remember hope. I remember my second IVF cycle. I remember embryos growing and transfers happening. I remember my positive pregnancy result and my transition to motherhood.

My friend, I know that you are struggling and that I cannot fix that. I know that your path may be very different than mine. However, I do know that you are right: you do deserve to be a mother, and you will make an amazing mother!  I hope that motherhood finds you. It may not be the way your expected; it may be very unconventional, but I hope it brings you happiness.

Stay strong, sweet mama-to-be.

Our Children, Ourselves (Unless We Have Something To Say About It)

0

In preparation for the arrival of our first child, my husband and I recently took inventory. Not of car seats or onesies but of our own, less desirable personality traits. What characteristics of ours would our darling offspring be better off not inheriting? When she leaves for college it’d be nice if—unlike my husband—she answers text messages within a two-week window. And she could do without my tendency to leave my pants on the floor wherever I take them off. (Of course where she leaves her pants in college is a whole other matter.)

She arrives in four months. Is that enough time to figure out everything that’s wrong with us and try to fix it (or at least cover it up)?  This conversation first came up last month over unlimited soup and salad. We were partaking in some fine dining at the Olive Garden to celebrate my morning sickness finally subsiding.

“The couple directly behind you hasn’t made eye contact in at least seven minutes,” Andy said.
“Oh my god! I was just about to tell you that the girl in that booth by the window has been trying to get her date’s attention and he will not look up from his phone,” I added to our familiar game. “She should have swiped left.”
“Oh wait,” Andy said looking over my shoulder. “The woman said something and the man responded. Aaaaand they’re back to staring at the soup.”

We continued this for several minutes. Making snarky comments about the communication skills (or lack of) of the diners around us and giggling together like fools. It’s one of our favorite pastimes.

“Are we jerks?” I asked, pumping the brakes on the fun.
“I mean, yeah,” Andy said unbothered as he swirled a breadstick in the sauce.
“Well we need to stop once the baby arrives!”
“We do?” He looked genuinely alarmed.
“We can’t have her thinking that it’s okay to sit around and make fun of everyone around her! Have you seen Mean Girls?”
“Hmm,” he said considering my point. “Yeah, that didn’t end well.”

We spent the rest of dinner discussing our own shortcomings instead of those of the strangers around us. (Progress!) And we certainly didn’t lack for conversation. By dessert we’d narrowed down the list down to one glaring flaw each. Andy tends to be emotionally closed off and not expressive. (His words. I usually compare his emotional competence to that of a lawn chair.) And I tend to give up on things once they become difficult. From career paths to Buzzfeed quizzes, when the going gets tough I get going. And while it’s easy to congratulate ourselves on being so self-aware, the question becomes: Is there a way to choose which of our footsteps the next generation follows?

We never found an answer. Is it hypocritical for me to make her stick with learning the harpsichord when I quit the flute after three weeks? Probably. Will I do it anyway? Probably. Should Andy spend time explaining to her that sometimes it’s okay to be sad, even though he’s still working on that? Absolutely. If we can stop her from inheriting qualities that won’t serve her well, we’ll certainly try. And if she is strong willed and stubborn and doesn’t listen to us, I’ll know that some character traits simply don’t skip a generation.

Top 3 Places To Explore Outdoors With Kids

0

Get Outside!

With spring weather just around the corner, it’s time to start finding places to explore outdoors with your kiddos. Warm weather is such a breath of fresh air after a winter full of indoor activities and crafts. Let that wanderlust take the lead and get outside! When my family and I moved to Rhode Island, there was lots adventuring and wandering. Our goal was to find places that would entertain the kids, while also being SAFE and STRESS FREE.

The beach is always a great choice in the summer for the kids, but in all honesty it is a disaster for me. One kid wants to swim, one kid wants to run along the beach chasing seagulls, and my 2 month old will want to hide in the beach tent. How can I possibly do this all on my own while my husband is working? I CAN’T. So beach days are saved for when there are more adult hands to wrangle all the wild things. These are the top 3 places that I will be going to and encourage you to explore with your children.

1. Sachuest Point (Newport)

This beauty is the absolute favorite in our family. Yes, if you live in northern RI it can be a bit of a drive, but it is worth it. Not only is it very convenient that Second Beach is located right next to this point (best place for a sunset, by the way), but it is full of variety. My kids love taking walks, and this path is the perfect distance. It is flat and only slightly sandy, so strollers are great on it. Once you take (the shortest) path to the water, you can park the stroller and let your kids climb down onto the rocky landing along the water. My kids LOVE collecting rocks, making rock towers, throwing stones in the waves, climbing on larger boulders, and watching seagulls. Easy entertainment where all I bring with me is the stroller and a water bottle.

2. Rome Point – John H. Chafee Nature Preserve (North Kingstown)

This preserve is a great spot to take your kiddos if they are good on longer walks. Our 2 and 4 year old walked the whole way by themselves, but with a round trip of 2.4 miles, they got cranky on the way back. If you pack a picnic and feed them at the water before heading back, you should be good to go. The trail is quite rocky so strollers are not recommended. We loved that this was another spot our kids could collect rocks, throw them in the waves, find sea creatures, and explore the woods as well. There are many trails that stem off of the main trail that we would let the kids investigate, but without knowing how far long they are, we chose to remain on the main route. Rome Point is a very common place to spot seals! We haven’t seen any yet, but we will definitely be looking again.

3. Arcadia Wildlife Management Area (Exeter)

While this spot is more inland than our top two, it is also a great outdoor location for exploring. The management area has many trails, but our favorite is Teft Hill Trail. This is a circular trail made out of decking material (with railings) so it is very level and safe. Strollers are also doable on this trail! Our kids love this hidden gem because they can squeal as loud as they want, stare in amazement at the waterfalls, and run ahead of their parents without getting yelled at. They love climbing on logs in the woods, digging in the dirt with their fingernails, and watching for beavers. I just love watching them enjoy childhood.
